Sewell, Anna. Black Beauty:
I thought I was being a good
grandmother by humoring my granddaughter and reading the book that she suggested
... Black Beauty. I assumed it was a child's book and was delighted to
discover it is a lovingly written account of the life of a horse in England in
the mid-1800's. It is easy enough for a seven-year-old child to read and
comprehend, but it also holds the attention of an adult. My eyes were opened to
the plight of work horses and horses that do not stay with the same owners over
their lifetime. The book gave me a larger appreciation for, and a feeling of
gratitude for my kind neighbors who obviously care for their two aging horses in
a loving way. Perhaps they've read Black Beauty. Surely, it should be
required reading for every horse owner. I almost want to say, tongue in cheek,
"horses are people, too!" I suggest reading the story on the first
pages about the author who wrote only this one book in her lifetime. My
grandchild was most impressed by her story. You will be too!
