Library Activities

Most activities at our library are sponsored by The Mayville Library Association, an informal group of library supporters. They organize and run our annual booksale (oldest library booksale in Chautauqua County) for three days each July. The money raised is used to provide such things as Preschool Storytime and our summer reading program.

Mayville Library Booksale

Mayville's sale is different this year. It will be a two day sale Friday, July 14th from 10-8 and Saturday July 15th from 10-4
IT WILL BE HELD INDOORS IN THE MAYVILLE UNITED METHODIST FELLOWSHIP HALL.

Other Association projects include the publishing of local history books by village historian Devon Taylor and the purchase of family oriented videos for the library.  If you wish to become a part of this vital organization, leave your name and address at the front desk and we will put you on our mailing list.

About Our Library

The Mayville Library had its beginnings in 1895 when a group of area woman formed a reading circle. They decided to call themselves the Tuesday Club(because they met the first Tuesday of each month) and in 1901 began taking steps to start a community library. The Tuesday Club Library received its offical charter in 1906.

This library had many temporary homes, the last being the site of the old County Clerks Office from 1910 until 1961 (today the site of Chautauqua county Vacationlands and the Grapevine Cafe).

Meanwhile, Emma K. Tourgee, widow of Judge Albion W. Tourgee and a Tuesday Club member, bequeathed much of her estate to the library. After all conditions of the estate were met, the Tuesday Club Library was given the parcel of property on which todays library now stands. It is on the corner of Evans and South Erie Street immediately next door to the Thorheim; the original home of Judge Tourgee and his family.

In 1960, a new library building was constructed on this site. The Tuesday Club Library moved into this location in 1961 and in 1962 changed their name officially to the Mayville Library.

For more details of our library's history, read Devon Taylor's book: Mayville, "A View Through Time". It may be borrowed or purchased from the library. Several historical items once belonging to the Tourgee family are also on display in our local history area.
